JENNY NORDBERG PRESENTS THE UNDERGROUND GIRLS OF KABUL
On February 28, 2017, Baker students attended a presentation by Jenny Nordberg about her book, The Underground Girls of Kabul. Nordberg was the first to uncover the story of the "bacha posh" - the act of disguising girls as boys in "gender-segregated" Afghanistan. Nordberg led an eye opening and in-depth discussion about this practice, and on the related themes of gender and oppression.
Carine McCandless, author of "The Wild Truth" spoke to English 11 and Creative Writing students yesterday about why her brother, Chris, the subject of Jon Krakauer's book, "Into the Wild" ventured alone into Alaska. Ms. McCandless delivered a deeply moving, thoughtful explanation to our students, and provided them with many opportunities to ask questions of their own. Thank you Ms. McCandless for visiting our school and providing this opportunity to our students!
